Overview:
Dimensional Weight or Volume Weight, is the minimum weight that a carrier will use to calculate the charges for transporting a package. Since all freight takes up space in the container, and light materials can take up more space than heavier freight of the same weight, carriers often use Dim Weight to rate the freight charges. Dim Weight is calculated according to the size of the package, rather than the actual weight, allowing the carrier to be fairly compensated for the space occupied in the container.

Dim Weight Basics:

The Dim Factor is the number representing the volume of a package allowed per unit of weight. Once the dim weight is calculated, it is compared to the actual weight of the package and the shipment charges are calculated based on the largest weight measurement.

  • Default Dim Factors can be set on the company and customer level.
  • The Dim Factor is selected from the list on the General Info tab in the shipment screen.
  • Available Dim Factors:
    • Manual - Allows the dim weight to be entered manually.
